1.To start, could you introduce yourself briefly?
I’m from Australia. I was born in Sydney, but I mostly grew up in Melbourne. When I was a kid my family moved to Papua New Guinea for three years because of my father’s job. That was a great experience! I came to Japan in 2001, and now I’m married and have a son. My wife is Japanese, and our son speaks Japanese and English.2. How did you end up in Japan? After I graduated from university, I wanted to travel outside Australia. I knew somebody who had been an Eikawa teacher in Japan, so I thought I would try that. My plan was to stay in Japan for one year, and then go back to Australia. The language school
that I worked at was in Shimokitazawa. I really enjoyed my life in Shimokita, and I made lots of friends. So at the end of the year I thought “maybe I’ll stay in Tokyo for one more year”. Now I’ve been here for 21 years!

3. What are some hobbies or things that you enjoy doing?
I love listening to music. I play guitar a little, so I like a lot of guitar music - rock, metal, grunge, etc. But I also like other genres like reggae, electronic, trip-hop, jazzy hip-hop, etc. Recently I have also been really into jazz-fusion music.4. What do you find most enjoyable about teaching?
I enjoy helping students to discover their potential and become themselves more. I hope that my classes can help students to expand their view of the world in some way. It always makes me happy when a student tells me “I never liked English class before, but now I do”.5. What culture shock have you experienced while living in Japan?
When I lived in Australia I usually went everywhere by car, and hardly ever used trains. Traveling by train everyday was a big change for me. I don’t like really crowded trains in the morning or at night, but I think we’re lucky that we can go almost anywhere in Tokyo by train. The public transport system is really amazing here!6. What topics do you feel you would want to chat for your English salon?
Music and movies are topics that I like talking about. Also travel. I’ve travelled to a lot of countries around the world, and I hope to visit more in the future. I’ve also been to some different areas of Japan, but there are still many parts of the country that I haven’t visited yet. Please tell me something special about your hometown or area!7. Any messages for Takushoku students?
Your time in university is a great chance to meet new people and new ideas. In class or in clubs or circles, I hope you have experiences that will help you grow as a human. I’m looking forward to meeting you all!オン・キャンパス留学のすすめ~授業以外でもネイテイブ教員と「語学サロン」でカジュアル・トーク!~(6&7月語学サロンスケジュール)
