2022年12月23日に麗澤会館の90年記念ホールにおいて、３年と４年の合同英語劇『Baby, It's Cold Outside』を上演しました。クリストファー・パイパー先生作のこのミステリー作品の全ての台本、衣装、演出を学生で協力して作り上げました。試行錯誤しながらお互いにアドバイスやアレンジをしてリハーサルや準備ができたことはとても良かったと思える点です。
冷静で勇敢な小説家を演じたYANG、魅力的な旅行客を演じたLU、個性的な探偵を演じたXUEと個性豊かな俳優が揃いました。当日は友人やお世話になった先生方、職員の方々が沢山来てくださりとても素敵な思い出になりました。通常ゼミというと講義を受けてプレゼンなどを行うというイメージがありますが、私たちのゼミでは劇場で実際に身体を使って表現しました。一生忘れられない思い出をこのゼミナールで体験しました。

Baby, It's Cold Outside: Theater Review
On December 23rd 2022, at Ritaku Kinen Hall Theater, members of third and fourth year Piper Seminar performed an original play called Baby, It's Cold Outside. Many students and some teachers attended and enjoyed an afternoon of music, mirth and murder.Set in a snowbound country hotel in mid-20th century England, the play was a murder mystery comedy with a Christmas theme. The characters are snowed in at the hotel on Christmas Eve and gossip about other guests. The next morning Mrs. Phyllis Navidad, is found dead and the mystery begins.
The cast were very impressive, and performed their roles wholly in English. Yang Jiani put in a polished performance as the amateur detective, Paige Turner, delivering her lines with real confidence and flourish as she revealed the murderer in the final act. Tsukasa Toiwa played Chris Mistry, a young man with a mysterious past, with light-hearted energy. Xue Longke played the oily, pipe-smoking ex-policeman, Watson Telly, with a nice sense of comic timing.
Lu Diao brought some glamour to the stage with her jewel thief, Miss Anna Partridge, bursting into each scene with real verve. Miku Isome, a second-year volunteer to the group, was excellent as the jaunty, young Mary Christmas, really lighting up the first act in particular. Emily Piper put in a controlled, emotional turn as the bereaved widow, Carol Singer.
Tomoya Nomaguchi played the murdered old lady and, despite being murdered early in Act 2, managed a memorable bit of character acting. Similarly, Naoki Koyama was highly comical as the taciturn butler, Jack Frost, and the addle-headed servant, Jess Nutts, managing to play both roles almost simultaneously!
Overall, the 35-minute play was an outstanding achievement from these students and elicited a very positive reaction from the audience. Several audience members commented on how funny and enjoyable the performance was.
The original script was written by Piper Sensei and the members of the third-year and fourth-year seminar groups in September 2022, and then practiced and rehearsed during weekly seminar classes. The students of both seminar groups worked together to act, direct and design the performance, learning many new skills along the way. Some of the cast will graduate this year and we wish them all the best for the future.

クリストファー・パイパー ゼミ 「Theatre Arts（演劇研究）
In this seminar students will learn all about Theatre Arts. We will examine the history and language of theatre. We will look at some specific playwrights. We will also try practical theatre skills, such as acting, stage management and playwriting. The
content of each class will depend very much on the confidence and experience of the students involved. We will begin by looking at some theatre history and theory. We will then move on to look at some specific theatre texts, such as Shakespeare. Once
we are ready we will start learning practical theatre skills and work towards a full theatre performance at the International Theatre Festival.
